Pat O’Connor of North Vernon became one of auto racing’s standout figures, rising from dirt tracks and bullrings in southern Indiana to national and international acclaim. Handsome, articulate, and talented, he won many sprint car races, earned two AAA championships and a USAC championship, and was inducted into the Sprint Car Hall of Fame as he pursued his ultimate goal of competing in the Indianapolis 500. At Indianapolis, he was a contender from his first 500 in 1954, finished eighth in both 1955 and 1957, and gained national attention for his Speedway prowess, including a cover appearance on Sports Illustrated. Despite his fame, he remained rooted in North Vernon, where he kept a home and several businesses. His untimely death on May 30, 1958, touched people everywhere, and he remains one of racing’s most beloved drivers.
