Gail Sexton of Sunset in Pickens County created Resting Place, a lake and mountain landscape based on a wall hanging she designed and quilted. The work faces 306 East Main Street, the office location of Dr. William W. Spearman, Optometry Specialist, and is placed on the wall of the historic Keowee Bank building, erected in 1898. The bank later closed during the Great Depression, though the outline of its vault remains visible. In 1929 Leon McCall purchased the building and opened a café, and in 1963 Bobby Garren bought the business and operated it as Garren’s Café. Resting Place reflects Sexton’s artistic skill as both a painter and a quilter. A self-taught artist, she began painting mostly landscapes in oils and acrylics in the early 1970s, made her first quilt for her daughter in 1971, and became a serious quilter in 1984. Her move from painted landscapes to fabric art followed naturally, and Resting Place is one of her favorite quilts, using her signature techniques for these smaller art pieces. Through her teaching, she has inspired quilters throughout the Upstate and South Carolina, especially through instruction in appliqué, landscape quilts, and machine quilting.
