Liberty was founded in 1776 by a group of Patriots and was named for the principle for which they fought. In 1935, city officials included Mayor Dr. E.J. Bryson, Treasurer C.L. Templeton, Aldermen C.E. Bush, H.F. Hunt, G.F. Smith, and F.N. Gossett, Water Commission chairman J.C. Boggs with J.M. Abbott, P.A. Kay, and superintendent H.A. Davis, Police Department chief J.W. Julian and J.L. Mills, and Streets official Jeff Jamison, with Shell Gas also named.
