These weathered cannons are 12 pound Dahlgren boat howitzers that were mounted on a Civil War ship sunk in Pensacola, Florida harbor. They were constructed according to a design perfected by Rear Admiral John A. Dahlgren. After being recovered from Florida waters, the cannons were held by the Grand Army of the Republic, a Civil War veterans organization, and in 1950 were donated to the City of Gladwin for display in Highland Cemetery at the Veteran's Memorial. The cannons were stolen in 1988 and returned to the city after an extensive nationwide search. They are currently on loan to the County of Gladwin for display at the Veteran's Honor Roll.
