South Higgins Lake State Park occupies 1,364 acres on Higgins Lake’s southern shore near Roscommon, with shoreline on the lake, land around Marl Lake, and parts of the Cut River. Opened in 1927 on 100 acres with a 15-unit campground, it expanded over time into one of Michigan’s largest state park camping areas, with a major addition in 1984 when the state acquired the tract around Marl Lake. The park combines busy recreation areas for swimming, boating, fishing, picnicking, hiking, skiing, and hunting with a quieter forest and wetland landscape that supports bald eagles, loons, kingfishers, turkeys, and other wildlife.
