North Higgins Lake State Park is a 449-acre recreation area on Higgins Lake’s north shore in northern Michigan that preserves an important part of the state’s reforestation history. The park stands on the former grounds of a major seedling nursery and includes the Higgins Lake Nursery and CCC Museum, which interprets the Civilian Conservation Corps’ work in Michigan from 1933 to 1942. During those years, more than 100,000 young men carried out conservation projects including tree planting, firefighting, and trail and bridge construction. The park also features the Ralph A. MacMullan Conference Center, a surviving CCC building, while continuing to serve visitors with camping, swimming, fishing, boating, and forest trails.
