Mount Calvary Cemetery began with the burial of 16 soldiers massacred during the Texas Revolution of 1836, when Refugio citizens buried the bones of Capt. Amon King and his men after they had been scattered on the prairie. The burial place was later forgotten and rediscovered in 1934. Near the north fence lies the grave of J. Hampton Kuykendall (1820?-1882), a revolutionary soldier, journalist, congressman, and scholar. Also interred there are Irish settlers of the 1830s Power-Hewetson Colony, including empresario James Power, who also signed the Texas Declaration of Independence.
