California Botanic Garden in Claremont is California’s largest botanic garden devoted to the state’s native plants, with about seventy thousand plants representing roughly two thousand native species, hybrids, and cultivars. Founded in 1927 by Susanna Bixby Bryant as Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden, it began in Orange County and was dedicated to preserving and promoting California flora through field collection, propagation, and scholarship. After fire, storms, and Bryant’s death, Philip Alexander Munz helped relocate it to Claremont in 1950, strengthening public access and academic ties. Its seed bank, research programs, and RSA-POM herbarium of more than 1.2 million specimens make it a major center for conservation and botany.
