On Aug. 12, 1782, Capt. John Holder and 17 militiamen overtook a band of Wyandots on Great Salt Creek on the Licking River, six miles N.E., after the Wyandots had captured two boys, Jones Hoy and Jack Calloway, near Boonesborough. In the skirmish that followed, Holder lost four men and, being outnumbered, withdrew without the boys. Hoy was held captive seven years, and Calloway not so long.
