John Gingery built this 14 by 18 foot log cabin in 1863 in Five Mile Grove, two miles northeast of Atlantic. Raised in Stark County, Ohio, where he became a school teacher, he arrived at age twenty-six just as Cass County was being organized and was hired to do the county’s clerical work. He married Mary Hyatt of Audubon County, Iowa, on April 28, 1866, and ten children were born to them, with all but the tenth and youngest born in this house. The cabin may also have served as the first schoolhouse in Rymosa Township until 1868, when a separate school building was erected. Later standing on the Gipple Farm northeast of Atlantic, it was preserved and restored in 1976 as the Atlantic Rotary Club’s bicentennial project, with Rotarians and Boy Scout Troop 50 dismantling and numbering each log for rebuilding and the Atlantic Soroptomists furnishing the interior much as it originally was, in the hope that it would typify the early history of Cass County and Iowa.
