Bennett Mountain, or Bennett Peak, is a 1,909-foot summit in California’s Sonoma Mountains on the western edge of Annadel State Park. It divides Bennett Valley in the Russian River drainage basin from Sonoma Valley in the Sonoma Creek drainage basin. Bennett Valley was named for James N. Bennett, an Illinois emigrant who settled nearby in the 19th century. The mountain has long been part of the region’s wine history: Isaac DeTurk planted 30 acres of grapes at its western base in 1862 and by 1878 was producing 100,000 gallons of wine. Since 2003, its summit has marked the eastern edge of the Bennett Valley American Viticultural Area, and it was burned after the October 2017 Northern California wildfires.
