Crane Mountain, the highest peak in Lake County, Oregon, rises 8,451 feet in the Warner Mountains near Lakeview and stands out as an independent summit at the edge of the Basin and Range country. A classic fault-block mountain, it is shaped largely of basalt, with exposed John Day rhyolite tuff, agates, thunder eggs, and small traces of gold-bearing quartz. Its wetter climate supports varied forests, meadows, and abundant wildlife. The mountain’s recorded history includes an 1867 ambush during fighting involving U.S. Army scouts and a Paiute raiding party, later pioneer settlement, a Forest Service fire lookout built in 1952 and removed in 1972, and its present role as a recreation destination.
