Konwakiton Glacier
Nature
Konwakiton Glacier lies on the southern flank of Mount Shasta, at the head of a large cirque on the south side of Misery Hill cone near Thumb Rock. Although it is the mountain’s fifth largest glacier and far smaller than Shasta’s four biggest glaciers, it is the most frequently visited because the standard climbing route up Avalanche Gulch passes along its western edge. In some places, climbers come within a few feet of the bergschrund at its head. A detailed survey in 2002 found that Konwakiton had grown by about a third since 1951, reflecting a broader expansion of seven Mount Shasta glaciers over that period.
