Wintun Glacier lies on the eastern flank of Mount Shasta in California and is the state’s third largest and third most voluminous glacier, behind nearby Hotlum and Whitney glaciers. Beginning high on the mountain’s main summit, it contains Mount Shasta’s highest permanent snow and ice. Its upper reaches rise above 14,100 feet to within a few dozen feet of the true summit before flowing east down a steep slope and dividing into two lower lobes, the longer reaching about 9,800 feet. A 2002 survey found that Wintun was among seven Mount Shasta glaciers that had grown since 1951, nearly doubling in size.
