Mount Shasta, at the southern end of the Cascade Range in northern California, is a potentially active stratovolcano whose 14,179-foot height and immense mass make it one of the most dominant peaks in the West. Built from four overlapping cones, it is the most voluminous stratovolcano in the Cascade Volcanic Arc and has erupted repeatedly in the last 10,000 years, most recently about 200 years ago. Its slopes hold seven named glaciers and major landforms such as Avalanche Gulch. Long a landmark on regional travel routes, it later drew climbers, scientists, writers, and tourists, and it also holds enduring Indigenous and modern spiritual significance.
