On May 15, 1864, the 23d A.C. (US) shifted from Camp Cr., 1.5 mi. west, to this vicinity, where it extended the left of Sherman’s line (US) to the Conasauga River. Hovey’s 1st division supported Williams’ 1st division, 20th A.C. (US), between the Scales house and the railroad during Stewart’s 2d attack. On May 16, Johnston’s forces (CS) evacuated his position and withdrew south, followed by the 4th and 14th A.C. (US). The 20th, and the 1st and 2d divisions, 23d A.C. (US), moved southeast to the Coosawattee River; Cox’s 3d division (US) moved north to Hogan’s Ford on the Conasauga River near Tilton and by way of Holley to Field’s Mill on the Coosawattee River.
