On May 14, 1864, the 20th Corps (USA) was shifted from Camp Creek Valley, 0.5 mi. west, and aligned across the road, with the 2d and 3d divisions in reserve and the 1st Division extending Stanley’s Division of the 4th A.C. (USA) to the State R.R. On May 15, Butterfield’s 3d Division and Geary’s 2d Division of the 20th A.C. (USA), astride the road, moved in assault on Hood’s Confederate line 0.7 mi. south in an attempt to break through. Butterfield, west of the road, led off, followed by Geary east of the road, with 6 brigades in all. They failed to break Hood’s line, but seized and removed the 4 guns of Corput’s Cherokee Battery (Confederate).
