The Presidential Range is the highest section of New Hampshire’s White Mountains, with major peaks named largely for American presidents and other prominent 18th- and 19th-century public figures. Mount Washington, the tallest summit, is followed by Mount Adams and Mount Jefferson. The range is especially renowned for extreme weather, including sudden high winds and whiteout conditions, and Mount Washington was long the site of the highest wind speed recorded at the Earth’s surface. These harsh conditions have made the range a training ground for mountaineers and a demanding setting for the Presidential Traverse, while also contributing to frequent rescues and fatalities. It remains one of the Northeast’s most celebrated and challenging mountain landscapes.
