Mount Washington State Park occupies the summit of Mount Washington in New Hampshire, the highest peak in the northeastern United States, focusing on visitor facilities at the top rather than a broad mountain landscape. Summer features include the observatory, museum, shops, and the Tip Top House, which survived a 1908 fire that destroyed the other summit buildings. The summit has attracted visitors since at least 1642, and easier access came with the summit road completed in 1859 and the Cog Railway in 1869. Land transfers in 1951, 1964, and 2008 created the present park, which remains reachable by road, railway, and hiking trails.
