Tuckerman Ravine, a glacial cirque on Mount Washington’s southeast face in New Hampshire’s White Mountains, is one of the Northeast’s best-known ski areas and a year-round hiking destination. Famous for spring skiing, it draws thousands of backcountry skiers who climb to its steep headwall and descend routes ranging from easier gullies to severe cliff-lined terrain. Named for botanist Edward Tuckerman, who worked here in the 1830s and 1840s, the ravine became central to New England’s early extreme skiing culture after skiing was recorded on Mount Washington by 1899. Its American Inferno races and Toni Matt’s famed 1939 schuss made it legendary, even as avalanches and falling ice have made it dangerous.
