Cerro Noroeste is an 8,283-foot mountain in southern California’s Kern County, about a mile north of the Ventura County line and a few miles southwest of Pine Mountain Club in Los Padres National Forest. Its Spanish name means “northwest mountain,” and it was formerly called Mount Abel after former Kern County supervisor Stanley Abel. Though bordered on the south and west by the Chumash Wilderness, the summit lies outside it because a paved public road reaches the top. Access comes by Cerro Noroeste Road, which usually closes after early winter snowfall and reopens in May. Near the summit are Campo Alto Campground and a radio tower.
