Abraham Lincoln, seeking the nomination for the presidency, addressed a rally in the Town Hall of Meriden on March 7, 1860, declaring that government of the people, by the people and for the people, shall not perish from the earth. The occasion was later linked in memory with the Civil War veterans of Meriden on May 30, 1948.
