Chauncey Peak is a 688-foot traprock mountain in Meriden, Connecticut, on the Metacomet Ridge, where a compact landform concentrates much of central Connecticut’s natural history. Formed from basalt lava flows about 200 million years ago as North America rifted from Eurasia, it was later shaped by faulting, tilting, erosion, and glaciation into steep cliffs above Crescent Lake. Those dramatic slopes support unusual microclimates, rare plant communities, and habitat and migration corridors for raptors. The mountain is also a recreation destination, crossed by the Mattabesett Trail and partly protected within Giuffrida Park, though quarrying has heavily affected its eastern side.
