South Mountain is a 767-foot traprock peak in the Hanging Hills of Meriden, Connecticut, rising about 400 feet above the city. Known for its vertical cliffs and sweeping southward views across Connecticut toward Long Island Sound, it is one of the prominent natural features of the area. Most of the mountain lies within Hubbard Park, which encompasses 1,800 acres. The Metacomet Trail runs for 51 miles along the mountain’s wooded backside, although no official trail reaches the southern cliff face. South Mountain is a destination for hiking and, in winter, for snowshoeing and backcountry skiing.
