Etna’s first post office operated from 1885 to 1895 three miles to the northwest, and a new post office later operated 1.5 miles east until 1921. In 1907, Etna gained a school, store, and telephone exchange. Andrew Ostergard enlarged the store in 1912, and it later provided unofficial mail service until closing in the early 1930s. The telephone exchange closed in 1933, and the school closed in 1966. Automobiles and a declining population reduced the need for the services provided by such remote localities.
