Samuel L. Taylor and Martha Taylor, their sons Moses, Richard, and Benjamin with his family, were among the earliest settlers in the area known as Sand Town. They arrived from North Carolina in 1859 with enslaved people Kijeah, Matilda, and James, accompanied by friends William and Beulah Lunn and their son E.S. The Taylors prospered as farmers and livestock breeders, and local tradition holds that Moses sold a "Race Mare" to outlaw Sam Bass. The remaining gravestones preserve the lives of these pioneers of the Little Elm area, though not all graves are marked.
