Stillwater National Wildlife Refuge protects a major wetland landscape in Nevada’s Lahontan Valley near Fallon, preserving part of the Stillwater wetlands since 1949. Spanning 79,570 acres, it is one of Nevada’s most important areas for migratory birds and among the state’s best-known birding destinations. The refuge has been recognized internationally for the vast numbers of shorebirds that pass through, and it is also identified as a Globally Important Bird Area. More than 280 bird species have been recorded here, while the wetlands support hundreds of thousands of shorebirds, more than a quarter million waterfowl, and over 20,000 other water birds.
