The William Benton Museum of Art is the public fine arts museum on the University of Connecticut’s main campus in Storrs, serving both the university and the wider public through free admission, exhibitions, concerts, art walks, and other events. Its Collegiate Gothic building was constructed in 1920 as the university’s main dining hall and opened as an art museum in 1967. Part of the University of Connecticut Historic District–Connecticut Agricultural School, it is named for U.S. senator and trustee William Benton. Its collection began with Charles Lewis Beach’s efforts and gift, and today includes more than 6,500 works, especially in modern and American art.
