Pelham Mills Site near Greer, South Carolina, preserves the ruins of a cotton factory complex on the Enoree River that evolved through several names and owners over more than a century. Founded in 1820 by the Reverend Thomas Hutchings, it is believed to have been the first cotton mill in the old Greenville District. Later known as the Lester Factory and Buena Vista Factory before becoming Pelham Mills in the 1880s, the site retains foundations, smokestack bases, and a stone dam with six sluice gates. Vacated by 1940 and destroyed by fire in the 1940s, it endures as evidence of the region’s early textile industry.
