Authorized by President Lincoln, Maj. Gen. Wm. Nelson established in August 1861 the first camp south of the Ohio River for recruitment of federal troops in the Civil War. It was named for Richard M. Robinson, a Union supporter who offered his house and farm as the campsite. A noted stagecoach stop, the house also served as Nelson's headquarters. The camp later moved to Camp Nelson in Jessamine County.
