Crane Wildlife Refuge is a 674-acre protected landscape in Ipswich and Essex, Massachusetts, managed by The Trustees of Reservations as part of the larger Crane Estate alongside Castle Hill and Crane Beach. Encompassing Long Island, Choate Island, and parts of the Great Marsh, it preserves both coastal habitat and historic features. The land was owned by Richard T. Crane Jr. from 1909 to 1949, while the Choate House, the refuge’s oldest surviving structure, dates to the early 1700s and reflects a much deeper human presence. Established in 1974, the refuge became the estate’s quieter marsh-and-island landscape, uniting conservation and history on the North Shore.
