Annisquam Harbor Light, on Wigwam Point in Gloucester’s Annisquam section, is one of the oldest lighthouse sites in Massachusetts and among the oldest around the Gloucester peninsula. Established in 1801 after a congressional appropriation, the station began with a 40-foot wooden tower, replaced in 1851 by another wooden tower and in 1897 by the present brick lighthouse built on the same foundation. The original keeper’s house survived and is still used by United States Coast Guard personnel. A foghorn added in 1931 was later restored after local complaints, and both the light and fog signal were automated in 1974. The station was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.
