Algernon Sidney Thruston was a lawyer, soldier, and farmer, born in Louisville in 1801 and died at Thruston in 1864. He went to Texas with a company of volunteers in 1836, served the Republic of Texas as Commissary General of Purchases in 1837 and Quartermaster General in 1838, was a political ally of President Sam Houston, and practiced law in Houston. He returned to Daviess County in 1854, and this community became known as Thruston. His father, Col. John Thruston, served at Kaskaskia and Vincennes with Gen. Clark in the Revolutionary War at age 16. His grandfather, Rev. and Col. Charles Mynn Thruston of Va., was a "fighting parson" of the Revolution, and Charles received 15,000 acres in Daviess and Ohio counties for military services.
