Staff Sergeant Archie Mathies of the U.S. Army Air Corps was born at Stonehouse, Scotland, on June 3, 1918, and was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for conspicuous gallantry after he was killed in action over enemy-occupied Europe in the flying fortress Mizpah on February 20, 1944.
