Dr. Thaddeus Brockett Rice was born and raised in Prattsville, Alabama, and lived most of his adult life in Greene County, where he had an abiding love and pride in its past, present, and future. He served the county in many capacities, including pharmacist, county historian, telephone manager, mayor, chairman of the Red Cross, president of a bank, deacon and treasurer in the Baptist church, and at different times holder of all offices in the San Marino Lodge in Greensboro. He was president of the Pharmaceutical Association in 1910. In the 1930s, he gathered all the material for his book, History of Greene County 1776-1876, and his dearest wish was to have the more than 700 typewritten pages published as Greene County's own history. He died in 1950 without seeing that dream fulfilled, but ten years later, through the efforts of several local citizens, Carolyn White Williams completed the editing, and the book was published in 1961.
