Snoqualmie Falls is a 268-foot waterfall on the Snoqualmie River east of Seattle that is both a major scenic attraction and a sacred place for the Snoqualmie people, whose traditions hold it as a burial ground and the place where First Woman and First Man were created by Moon the Transformer. Its mist is understood as carrying prayers and linking Heaven and Earth. The site also became important in industrial history: an underground hydroelectric plant built in 1899 was the world’s first of its kind, with later expansion downstream. Preservation efforts tied to its cultural significance led to historic recognition and tribal land purchase in 2019.
