In 1912, the South Amboy Post Office was the starting point for the first air mail delivery in New Jersey. Conceived by Assistant Postmaster Edwin Roddy, a member of South Amboy’s Business Men’s Association, and approved by Postmaster E. Heines, the flight took place on July 4, 1912. Aviator Oliver J. Simmons flew a Wright-Burgess Hydro-Aeroplane owned by Robert J. Collier from Perth Amboy to South Amboy, landed on the water by the coal docks, and received 1,250 pieces of mail from the South Amboy Post Office for delivery to the Perth Amboy Post Office. After an unsuccessful takeoff attempt caused by heavy boat traffic, a path was cleared, and at 12:30 p.m. he took off, crossed Raritan Bay, and delivered the mail to Perth Amboy. Afterward, South Amboy Mayor Michael Welsh sent a communication to the mayor of Perth Amboy expressing hope that this first exchange by the most modern conveyance would strengthen relations between the two communities.
