Orne Covered Bridge carries Back Coventry Road across the Black River in Irasburg, Vermont, near the village of Coventry. The current bridge, completed in 2000 after the 19th-century predecessor was destroyed by arson in 1997, is a replica of a rare single-span Paddleford truss. The earlier bridge was built either in 1879 or 1881, possibly by E.P. Colton or John Colton. By 1974 it was notable for surviving without major structural alteration and as Vermont’s only historic Paddleford truss bridge on a public roadway. The replacement preserves the form, setting, and local significance of this long-used Black River crossing.
