In the years following the Civil War, Jesse James brought crime and mayhem to this territory, favoring banks and trains as targets. He was a frequent visitor to Cameron but never committed a crime there. He had reason to remain peaceable, because Cameron’s Dr. Leibrandt once treated his wounds and received a $20 gold piece as payment. Jesse also favored the local saloons, three of which stood on this block. His final trip to Cameron was by rail, when his body, accompanied by his mother, uncle, and a lawman, was loaded onto a special train at Cameron Union Depot for burial.
