Patagonia Lake State Park in southern Arizona centers on Patagonia Lake, a reservoir formed by damming Sonoita Creek that supports fishing, camping, boating, hiking, birding, and picnicking. Its waters sustain several reproducing fish populations, while rainbow trout are regularly stocked from October to March. The park also contains the Sonoita Creek State Natural Area, Arizona’s first major state natural area, an 873-acre preserve protecting a rare Fremont cottonwood-Goodding willow riparian forest. With old-growth stands, notable aquatic diversity, and seasonal programs such as an annual mariachi festival, the park combines recreation with conservation in a region better known for dry grasslands and desert scenery.
