Mitchell Mesa is a prominent summit in Monument Valley on Navajo Nation land in northeastern Arizona, regarded by the Navajo as one of the valley’s paired “door posts” with Sentinel Mesa. Its steep rise, distinctive layered rocks, and erosion-shaped form make it a notable geological feature, and the Three Sisters spires at its southeast tip are among the area’s best-known formations. The mesa also preserves a human story in its name, recalling prospector Hearndon Mitchell, who was killed nearby after entering the area despite warnings. Today it remains an important part of Monument Valley’s landscape, valued for both its geology and its place in Navajo understanding of the region.
