Mitchell Butte is a prominent summit in Monument Valley on Navajo Nation land in northern Arizona, rising sharply from the desert floor near the visitor center and Highway 163. Its steep relief makes it visually striking despite its modest height. The butte also illustrates the layered geology that defines Monument Valley, with Organ Rock Shale below, De Chelly Sandstone forming cliffs, and the Moenkopi Formation above, spanning from the Permian to the Triassic. It was named for silver prospector Hearndon Mitchell, who returned to the area with Robert Merrick after a warning to stay away and was killed there by Utes in 1880.
