A 600-acre wetland at the mouth of Nine Springs Creek includes the 140-acre Madison Metropolitan Sewage District Wildlife Observation Area, created through a partnership between the Madison Metropolitan Sewage District and the Dane County Parks Department to enhance a unique and valuable resource. Linked to Capital Springs State Park, Lussier Family Heritage Center, Lake Farm Park, Nine Springs E-Way, Capital City Bike Trail, and the Monona Conservancy, the area was only a few years earlier a storage lagoon for biosolids produced at the Nine Springe Wastewater Treatment Plant. After the biosolids were removed, the area was reconstructed for wildlife habitat and recreation, with the aim of improving viewing opportunities for bird watchers and other naturalists while protecting a fragile habitat for shorebirds and other bird species.
