Bare Mountain is a 1,014-foot basalt peak in the Holyoke Range of Massachusetts’ Connecticut River Valley, part of the Metacomet Ridge and crossed by the Metacomet-Monadnock Trail. Rising about 1,000 feet above the valley floor, it is known for its bald summit, sweeping views, and distinctive east-side talus slope. The mountain is the highest point in South Hadley, a distinction once mistakenly given to nearby Mount Hitchcock until later analysis showed Bare Mountain stands eight feet higher within the town. Formed by early Jurassic lava flows later tilted by faulting, it also supports unusual microclimates and species, and remains a popular hiking destination valued for its geology and scenery.
