During the Vietnam War, 4,900 U.S. war dogs served, but only 204 returned home to U.S. soil. Of the 4,696 dogs who remained, 350 died from combat, and the rest were abandoned by the country they served. Their loyalty and sacrifice were honored in memory of animals who served during a time when war dogs were forgotten, and their lifesaving work was credited with preventing possibly 10,000 more names from being listed on the Wall.
