Weber Canyon is a forty-mile passage through Utah’s Wasatch Range near Ogden that has long served as one of the state’s important natural corridors. Its river, tributary creeks, water, and shelter drew prehistoric nomadic Native American groups, including the Shoshone and Ute. Later named for fur trapper John Henry Weber, the area also figured in early trapping and exploration, including an 1825 territorial dispute near present-day Mountain Green involving Peter Skene Ogden and Johnson Gardner. The canyon became a major route for westward migration, wagon travel, road building, and the transcontinental railroad, a role continued today by Interstate 84.
