The Superior Hiking Trail is a 310-mile footpath in northeastern Minnesota, stretching from the Minnesota-Wisconsin border to near the Canada-U.S. border and often following rocky ridges above Lake Superior through forests, streams, waterfalls, and mountain views. Inspired by the Appalachian Trail, it began construction in the mid-1980s, with the Superior Hiking Trail Association formed in 1986 to guide its development and care. By 2016 it became a continuous route. Its Duluth and North Shore sections support both day hiking and backcountry travel, with campsites and spur trails extending access. Built largely by local crews and volunteers, it became known for scenery, upkeep, races, and notable thru-hiking achievements.
