Lutsen Mountains is a major ski resort in northeastern Minnesota in the Sawtooth Mountains above Lake Superior. Founded in 1948 by George Nelson, it grew into a four-mountain network of Eagle, Ullr, Mystery, and Moose Mountains, becoming the largest ski resort in the Midwest and one of the northernmost in the contiguous United States. Its development was transformed in 1989 by the region’s first ski-resort gondola, later replaced during modernization that also expanded snowmaking. Known for family-friendly terrain, competitive skiing ties, and year-round tourism, it has also faced controversy over proposed expansion onto Superior National Forest lands opposed by environmental and tribal groups.
