Temperance River State Park lies on Minnesota’s North Shore of Lake Superior, spanning both sides of the Temperance River between Schroeder and Tofte. Europeans first settled the area permanently in the 1830s, and a naming tradition from 1864 holds that the river was called Temperance because its mouth formed no sand bar. In the 1930s, the Civilian Conservation Corps built river overlooks, and in 1957 the state created the 539-acre park. Known for a gorge and waterfalls unusually near Lake Superior, it offers campgrounds, trails including the Superior Hiking Trail to Carlton Peak, rock climbing, and habitat for mammals and migratory birds.
