TWA Flight 128, tail #N821TW, was approaching in light snow when it crashed into an orchard about 1,000 feet north of here on November 20, 1967, at 8:57 p.m. The four-engine Convair 880 was en route from Los Angeles to Cincinnati. Seventy people perished, including five Kentuckians, and two crew members and ten passengers survived. The National Transportation Safety Board ruled pilot error as the cause of the crash. It remains the worst accident in Kentucky aviation history, and it led to construction of an Approach Lighting System for runway 18, completed in July 1969.
